Architectural glass is one of the most important elements in modern residential and commercial construction. Whether you're specifying structural glazing, slim framed sliding doors, glass extensions, aluminium windows or bespoke glass installations, understanding when to place your order is essential for maintaining your project timeline.
Unlike standard building materials, architectural glazing systems are custom manufactured to suit each project's dimensions, performance requirements and design specification. As a result, specialist glazing products require longer lead times and should be considered much earlier in the construction programme than many clients expect.
Architectural glazing products are not off-the-shelf items.
Each specification is typically designed, engineered, manufactured and quality-checked specifically for an individual project. This process may include:
Because of these requirements, glazing packages often have significantly longer lead times than standard building products.

While project requirements vary, typical manufacturing lead times for specialist glazing products include:
Lead time: 8–10 weeks
These large-format glazing systems require specialist fabrication, precision engineering and bespoke manufacturing.
Lead time: 6–8 weeks
Custom powder-coated aluminium systems generally require several weeks for fabrication and quality control.
Lead time: 8–10 weeks
Bespoke bifold systems often involve custom sizing and glazing specifications, increasing production times.
Lead time: 6–8 weeks or longer depending on complexity
Structural glazing projects can require additional engineering and design coordination, particularly for glass roofs, glass box extensions and frameless assemblies.
As a general rule, architectural glass should be ordered as soon as the design has been finalised and structural openings are confirmed.
Many project delays occur because glazing is considered a finishing item when, in reality, it is a critical component of the building envelope.
For most projects, glazing should be specified and ordered before:
This is particularly important because bespoke kitchens often have similar lead times to architectural glazing systems. Ordering glazing late can delay several subsequent stages of the build.

Architectural glazing is typically installed during the later stages of construction, once the primary structure is complete and the building is ready to be made weather-tight. Because glazing often forms a critical part of the building envelope, any delays in procurement can have a direct impact on the wider project programme.
Many project teams underestimate the lead times associated with bespoke architectural glass systems. Unlike standard building materials, specialist glazing products are manufactured to order, meaning orders should be placed well in advance of the planned installation date.
Failing to order architectural glazing early enough can result in:
To minimise these risks, glazing specialists should be involved as early as possible in the design and planning stages. Early engagement helps secure manufacturing slots, allows for detailed technical coordination, and ensures installation dates are aligned with the wider construction programme
Whether you're designing a contemporary extension, specifying structural glazing for a new build, or planning a bespoke glazing package for a luxury home, early engagement is the best way to keep your project on schedule.
Our technical glazing specialists can advise on lead times, design requirements, performance specifications and installation planning, helping you make informed decisions from the earliest stages of your project.

How do I start the process of getting a quote for the glazing I need?
In order to create a quotation for your architectural glazing or window package, we will ask for you to send some information about your project to us via email. The information that we will need will include:
The aesthetic design of the glazing you want
Any performance targets or criteria required from the glazing
The size of the glass elements required
The location of the project, including the first line of the address
A return email address and telephone number
If you have planning or architectural drawings that show the glazing elements you would like us to quote for please send these to us via email. All the information that we need is normally found on these drawings and it is the simplest way to understand the scope of the works.
If you do not have architectural or planning drawings to send to us you can send sketches with dimensions or written accounts of what glazing is required. Please make sure that all the information detailed above is included to ensure that we understand the full scope of the project and provide you with a detailed and accurate quotation.
Simply email your drawings and project information to [email protected] and your project will be processed for a quotation. Or better still come to the showroom with your drawings to discuss costs and requirements in person.
